This is great news for Sonic fans everywhere as it strongly implies there's a sequel in store for the Blue Blur. With the success of Detective Pikachu, the franchise is already developing its own sequel set to release sometime in 2022. With both Sonic and Pikachu doing so well, it appears that not only are video game movies making a giant comeback, but they're looking to create lasting franchises as well. Sonic appears to be flying past Pikachu's worldwide revenue so it's safe to say fans will be seeing more of Sonic and the rest of the gang in the distant future.
Other top contenders at the box office this weekend include the DC Margot Robbie led film Birds of Prey, which hit $7 million in its third weekend. Following closely behind at $5.9 million is the horror movie Brahms: The Boy II and Bad Boys for Life at $5.8 million. The Oscar-winning film 1917 is still strongly seated in its eleventh week at $4.4 million. All of this to say, Sonic is still leading the pack by a minimum of $19 million and absolutely crushing it in audience and critic reviews.
Sonic the Hedgehog is rated PG for action sequences and can be seen at most major theaters right now.
