Pumpkin Jack is Jak and Daxter Meets MediEvil

An exciting new gameplay trailer has been released for Pumpkin Jack. The game looks to have the platforming elements of Jak and Daxter with the horror aesthetic of MediEvil. The trailer showcases aspects of both games with a few unique twists. For those who weren't altogether satisfied with the remaster of MediEvil, this title may tread new ground for fans wanting more.
The game sets the picture of a very ordinary and peaceful world that is disrupted by a Devil who is suffering from tedium. After a wizard restores the original peace, Pumpkin Jack is sent to restore chaos on behalf of the devil. With some help from a number of flying companions, the game sets itself up for an adventure. The last decade saw plenty of great platformers and many will hope this creepy game kicks off the next ten years.

The first gameplay demo shows a variety of enemies and collectables. From skeletons to scarecrows it looks like Jack will have plenty of enemies to battle in a variety of ways. Much like platformers Spyro and Super Mario, there is plenty to collect (namely crow skulls) and there seems to be some replay value in its collectibles. Of course, it is too soon to review the merits of the game, but it is following the conventions of acclaimed predecessors in the genre. With this in mind, it will be interesting to see if the game can hold its own in a market full of quality platformer remakes.

There are plenty of platformer elements that fans will want to see and others that the game will try to avoid, but what will determine the success of the game will be how it innovates the genre. While the demo doesn't showcase anything too groundbreaking, the game likely has a few tricks up its sleeve. Furthermore, fans of MediEvil will be pleased to see a nod to the game as Jack detaches his head (much like Sir Daniel Fortesque) to complete puzzles and progress in the level.
It is always difficult to predict the success of indie games, but the last year saw plenty of great independent titles. There is no doubt that this demo will intrigue players and many will want to experience Pumpkin Jack. However, with plenty of competition, the game will have to provide plenty of unique charm to stand out from other platformers.
