Fortnite is trending on Twitter again for somewhat of a controversial reason. This time around, Fortnite is trending because of the continued argument over SBMM, or skill-based matchmaking, a controversial topic in Fortnite, both due to frustrations with the system and general misinformation about what it does. Nevertheless, that hasn't stopped many Fortnite players from going to Twitter to argue both for and against the continued implementation of SBMM in the battle royale with the hashtag #removeSBMM.
Epic Games added SBMM in late September 2019 to provide a more fair and fun environment for playing games. The more Fortnite players play, the more accurate their skill-rating is. Fortnite then uses this skill-rating to match players with others of similar skill level. The goal is to give every player a reasonably fair chance at winning, or at least to avoid players either completely dominating or getting dominated.
Complaints regarding SBMM fall into a handful of categories. One large group specifically prefers matchmaking without SBMM, saying that good players dominating bad players is fun and bad players getting dominated helps them get better. This is a common stance for Twitch streamers and Youtubers, so it reaches a surprisingly large audience. Another group believes SBMM is broken, particularly with regards to cross-play. A low-skill controller player matched with a low-skill keyboard and mouse player will still be disadvantaged, according to this group.
Many of the complaints come from players who are confused about how SBMM works. The cross-play group is one of these confused factions, as there's no reason to believe keyboard and mouse players are treated any differently than console players. Others seem to believe that SBMM actually makes matchmaking even less fair.
Much of the confusion can likely be attributed to Twitch streamers and YouTubers. Complaints from many sources tend to be high on drama and frustration but low on detail. For example, Ninja was previously quoted as saying "SBMM is not the answer." A portion of Ninja's viewers probably assumed he was right, regardless of the context.
Epic Games has made no indication that it plans to make big changes to its matchmaking system in Fortnite. That doesn't mean that it won't make changes, though. Epic has made dramatic changes in the past with little to no build-up. But, for its part, it seems like Epic Games is happy with the situation. And it seems like most Fortnite players are pretty happy with the changes, too, regardless of what's trending on Twitter.
