Early Dungeons and Dragons Jester Class Had Strange Abilities

 


The class' other abilities included jokes, ventriloquism, and puns, among others. All in all, it seems like a weird take on the Bard class, though with inverted Charisma. It is strange that a Jester– a profession that so obviously needs Charisma– would go without it, but Dungeons and Dragons can be strange. Plus, it does kind of play on the "creepy clown" thing.



Dungeons and Dragons has changed quite a bit since the game's inception, and it's weird to get a glance at what the game once was, especially through a modern lens. Nowadays, the Jester would be a weird, though effective, character, but one with an unmatched ability to disrupt a campaign in the wrong hands, so it may not be the best thing to introduce to a rowdy bunch of players.
On the other hand, Dungeon Masters looking to spice up a campaign may be able to adapt the class to their campaign. After all, a creepy jester character would be a good fit for a horror campaign, or even as an NPC that pops in now and again. The beauty of Dungeons and Dragons is that it falls on whatever the DM wants to create for a campaign.
Likely, other obscure classes are hiding out there somewhere, but the Jester is likely still one of the more interesting. Maybe, more like it will pop up in the future.
